Eat whole foods, use whole furniture
In the same way that eating whole, minimally processed foods can improve the health of your body, we strive to create pieces that emphasize whole, raw materials over fillers and composites for the well-being of your health and home.
If you look around, you'll notice the words veneer, engineered wood, MDF and particle board crop up frequently in the materials list for wooden furniture. Much of the wooden furniture you see today is not actually made entirely of wood. Rather, a thin piece of wood, veneer, is wrapped around a processed composite made of adhesives, wood chips and fibers, and other materials.
Pictured above: MDF, a type of engineered wood commonly found inside veneer furniture.
While this gives the appearance of wood, common concerns with this method of construction include formaldehyde off-gassing and low durability. Chipping in the veneer reveals the engineered wood below and cannot be as easily repaired as solid wood furniture, which is easily refinished. Solid wood furniture is more durable, contains fewer chemicals, and will stand the test of time as an heirloom piece made to last for generations.

Our wooden pieces are made from solid hardwood, never veneer, MDF, or particle board. Even back panels and shelves are solid wood, through and through. Our woods are air-dried, hand-sealed, and carefully kiln-dried in house and our wood finishes are proprietary recipes developed after decades of refinement. They contain no added formaldehyde and are low-VOC, designed to strengthen and enhance the natural beauty and character of each plank of wood.
Consumption is an integral part of life. To be alive is to create and destroy. And while it must be approached thoughtfully, it is unavoidable. Deeply entwined in our mission is the desire to produce and consume mindfully using whole ingredients that take into consideration the health of your home and our home, the planet.
By making each Sun at Six piece with the utmost care and highest quality raw materials, we hope that each piece will last for generations and many happy memories to come.
